Karakuri

Saturday, May 17th 2-4pm

In this workshop participants will study a simple cam and follower mechanism by building a karakuri puppet. The cultural context component reviews the work of Tanaka Hisashige who designed many karakuri (mechanical puppets) and founded a company that eventually became Toshiba.

The Hapeville Depot Museum offers a free, regular workshop for adults which combines art and history. Our goal is to have visitors explore history in a new way. Past workshops include: thinking about memory through collaging personal family photos, considering the impact of passed down traditions by learning to embroider warming tortilla cloths and learning the history and art of calligraphy. Through creating these experiences, we are able to make an impact and have visitors consider how history affects people today. The workshops are also a fun, stress free way for visitors to be creative and meet new people.
